The City of Joy
As a result of the HIV/Aids pandemic many families in Zambia were decimated leaving the eldest siblings at their head. This, along with abject poverty, left the young, particularly the females vulnerable and open to abuse. At the City of Joy in Mazabuka, Zambia these vulnerable girls and young women can find a loving home where they can feel safe and cared for again – nurturing their potential and affirming the qualities and talents they had forgotten they had.
The City of Joy is run by the Salesian Sisters, who were founded by St John Bosco and Mary Mazzarello, and who work for the good of young people around the world. Their purpose is to provide a home, a school, a church and a playground for all those they care for.
We, at Share the Light, aim to support the Sisters in their work at the City of Joy, helping to look after the ever-growing number of girls they currently have living with them. We aim to help them cater for the medical requirements of the girls and young women, also to help provide clothing and school uniforms, school equipment and help meet their nutritional needs. In addition we aim to help provide transport to enable groups from the City of Joy to travel out together and in safety, plus maintenance of fencing to keep their boundaries secure. Through fundraising we are currently able to send £200 (approximately 2500ZMK) a month to the City of Joy.
Our New Subproject
As the numbers have increased at the City of Joy the need for more toilet and shower facilities has become more urgent. The current facilities at the City of Joy are insufficient to meet their requirements and concern is growing for the health of the girls – there have been many outbreaks of diarrhea. Share the Light will be raising funds to help facilitate the provision of more toilets and shower facilities at the City of Joy.

“City of joy is a home for the girls who are in need. The help that we receive from the Share the Light group mean a lot to us. First and foremost the girls they feel loved. It also bring healing especially to those who are psychologically affected by their past experiences. Your help and support has changed most of them. Thank you.”
“Being able to spend time with the girls in the City of Joy, learn about some of their stories and their ambitions really gave me a massive appreciation for the value of education in empowering people and changing lives.”
“We are grateful for your continuous support which we have always felt when you are near around us and when you are far in your country. Everything has been going on well regard to school and our wellbeing as our diet has greatly improved and we are happy and grateful.”
